News Update!

I bid a fine hello to everyone,

Just a little update about things going on in the news. Don’t mean to ramble on and on like I normally do. I’ll make things short and sweet.

BANGKOK, Thailand - Confronted by a military junta willing to pull the trigger, Buddhist monks and democracy activists in Myanmar face long odds in trying to uproot an institution that has wielded absolute power for 45 years.

Every sign of dissent over the decades has been crushed, including a major uprising in 1988 that ended when troops gunned down thousands of peaceful demonstrators and imprisoned the survivors.

I’d say nuke them, but that would defeat the purpose. Can’t save the people if you reduce them to ash.

But in Myanmar, which is also known as Burma, there are no outward signs of any change in the cardinal principle of the generals: Retain power at all costs, no matter international pressure and condemnation.

I wonder how much power they’d wield if oil was found and Dubya wanted it?

“The risk of not cracking down is infinitely greater than risk incurred in cracking down,” said Mary Callahan, an expert on Myanmar at the University of Washington. “What we’ve seen in the last two days is a very clear message they are moving to put down what they consider a threat to the nation.”

So let’s murder a whole bunch of people. I say f**king invade! Kill every last Junta member. I’m sorry violence begets violence.

First came official warnings, then a curfew, and on Wednesday and Thursday the army finally flexed its muscles, sending its soldiers to beat demonstrators, arrest monks and political opponents and shoot into some crowds, killing several people.

Well in defence of the Junta, they did give 2 warnings before the third. Sort of like Clinton’s 3 strikes law.

Typically, the junta blames the protests on a conspiracy by “domestic and external elements,” meaning the West and those in Myanmar who look to its support in the demand for civilian rule. The military trots out a motto underlining a different value system — “peace, stability, unity.”

I have a motto too. “All, Obey, Lance.”

Support from China — and to a lesser extent other Asian nations investing in Myanmar, notably India, South Korea and Singapore — has undercut the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and other Western nations.

I always hated India, South Korea and Singapore.

The military does have a new card to play: Its policemen and soldiers have been better trained in riot control and the use of non-lethal force, Myanmar journalists say.

Oh, isn’t that sweet!?

“They will fight at all costs because these people have grown to believe they are only institution that can uphold the nation’s security. They think of themselves as the center of the nation.”

I think I’m the center of my nation. But apparently I’m wrong too.

Onto the next story!

JENA, La. - A black teenager whose prosecution in the beating of a white classmate prompted a massive civil rights protest here walked out of a courthouse Thursday after a judge ordered him freed.

Mychal Bell’s release on $45,000 bail came hours after a prosecutor confirmed he will no longer seek an adult trial for the 17-year-old. Bell, one of the teenagers known as the Jena Six, still faces trial as a juvenile in the December beating in this small central Louisiana town.

“We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week’s protest.

“He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him,” Sharpton said.

Isn’t that nice? The Louisiana government caves to a bunch of people who don’t like it when one of their own is thrown in jail. I said it before and I’ll say it again, if Bell was white, no one would have said s**t.

I’ll bet Sharpton is quite pleased with himself. He leveled the playing field all right. Now no one is guilty anymore.

MUMBAI, India - Five months later, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is still feeling the effects of a kiss from Richard Gere. Immigration officials at Mumbai airport briefly detained Shetty, saying she was still wanted for obscenity charges filed in the wake of the public kiss with the Hollywood star, her publicist, Dale Bhagwagar, said Thursday.

Shetty plays the musical’s lead role. “She called me in the middle of the night and was in tears,” said Bhagwagar, adding Shetty was finally permitted to join her dance troupe after prolonged questioning.“I can understand something like this if I’d committed a criminal offense. But what was my offense, when I’m just an actor, going to perform a musical on foreign land,” Bhagwagar quoted Shetty saying.

Oh please! Is still going on!? I told you I hate India. Someone should tell that backward group of anti-obscenity muckheads that a kiss is not obscene. The only thing that was obscene was that that poor Shetty woman was kissed by Richard Gere.

The official launch party for Microsoft’s “Halo 3″ was in Universal City, and after only one day, many of the movies produced in Universal City and other Hollywood locations would want the sales numbers pulled in by the game. The much-anticipated video game brought in $170 million on its first day of sales, according to an Associated Press report.

I only have three things to say about this.

1. I’m not a fan of the Halo series and so I don’t really care about Halo 3 in any shape or form. Sure it’s a nice game, just not my type of game.

2. I really, really don’t care how much the game made on its debut. The one thing I’ve hated about movies is when they started monitoring the box office. Seeing that trend in the gaming industry is making me cringe.

3. I so wish I had invented that game. I sure could use US $170 million.

That’s it! That’s all I’m going to say for now.

I bid adieu,

your Origami reporter,
L.Manly
