Top 10 Series: Vintage Star Wars Toys (Action Figures)

Hello everyone,

If you are at least 35, there’s a good chance you had a Star Wars toy or two. I would think girls might also have some, but this appears to be primarily the domain of the boys. Anyway this is my top ten list of Vintage Star Wars toys in the Action Figure category. I consider action figures just that, not vehicles or playsets of any size.

This list has not been endorsed by Lucasfilm Ltd., Steve Sansweet or Kenner Toys. I made this choice by my personal favourites. I start with the honorable mentions.

SY SNOOTLES and the REBO BAND Figure Set was an impressive collection of 3 figures and accessories. I remember when I bought my set, I was in Florida with my family, got terribly sick, saw the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and picked up this little piece. Too bad I didn’t leave it in the box.

Some might think this is really a playset or too big a toy, but RANCOR MONSTER Figure is essentially a really big figure. I had one as well but I wasn’t as impressed with it then some other figures.

Rancor was hard plastic and you really couldn’t stuff anything into his mouth without having a problem getting the sucker out again. I lost my Jawa in the Rancor for months and couldn’t get it back out.

But all in all, you have to respect the sheer size of this piece.

Now onto the list.

10. Yoda (ESB)

How can you not love Yoda? We all loved Yoda when he first appeared on the big screen and he had a cool figure with a little orange snake and real cloth for an outfit.

I remember my first Yoda figure and who gave it to me.

09. C-3P0 with Removable Limbs (ESB)

C-3P0 was always such a boring figure. Besides the fact that his arms were designed wrong from what the movie depicted, he was so hard to move when first bought.

Then the C-3P0 with removable limbs came along and yes he even had a little bag so that you could put him on Chewie’s back.

Don’t let the image fool you, he was originally released for The Empire Strikes Back, but Kenner had a habit of re-releasing them with each successive film.

08. Large Size R2-D2 (SW)

The first of the kick a** large size action figures, I always enjoyed R2-D2 among some of the others. Not sure why, maybe he was just a favorite character. I didn’t acquire all of the large size figures, but I managed a few of them.

Oddly enough it was none of the three main characters, only the peripheral characters. In the case of this R2-D2, I enjoyed the fact that he had a secret compartment with the Death Star plans hidden in his back.

If only he had a third leg…

07. Luke Skywalker in Battle Poncho (POTF 1)

The figures I always enjoyed were the ones that stood out from the rest. Here’s the last in the “Endor Heroes” line which I thought was so cool by the fact that they used real cloth in the toy.

Luke was my least fave of the 3 personally.

06. Han Solo in Trench Coat (ROTJ)

The second in the “Endor Heroes” line which I thought was so cool was of course Han Solo and his cool trench coat. I used to play with this one for days and days.

I even remember when and where I got the figure and how impressed I was with it. I would tell you the story, but i’m too tired.

05. Princess Leia Organa Boussh Disguise (ROTJ)

Leia as Boussh was a cool thing in Return of the Jedi and her action figure was just as cool to my young mind. The helmet came off her head after all.

We impressed so easily as children didn’t we?

04. Large Size Chewbacca (SW)

Now did you expect me to say anything less when it comes to the Chew-man? No way! His 4 inch figure was nice, but the large size one was even better.

Sure his fur was hard plastic but he had that cool bandolier and a real crossbow. The weapon for the smaller version was cool looking, but not an actual crossbow.

So I vote for the big Chewbacca.

03. Large Size Boba Fett (SW)

Yes, Boba Fett’s arrival and that of cohort IG-88 ushered in the death of the large size figure line, but he was totally cool as a 12 inch.

Sadly I never had one personally, I lived vicariously through a friend who had Boba Fett. I was quite envious for that, but in the end I’m probably a better man for never having one.

02. Princess Leia Organa in Combat Poncho (ROTJ)

I imagine my crush on Carrie Fisher and my nature to be impressed by helmets and green coloured cloth really made my day.

This figure is my absolute fave in the 4 inch line and I really enjoyed having the opportunity to play with her (along with Trench Coat Han) with my imagination in full bloom.

Thank you Kenner.

01. Large Size Han Solo (SW)

By far the greatest, the most fantastic of the actions (large and small) was the Han Solo. Besides being in cool clothes matching his costume. Besides the fact that the likeness was so impressive. It was his cool accessories. He had a pistol and a holster, how cool was that!? And that medal, the large Luke never got a medal. I think that’s important. This WAS the best of the line and I will have words with anyone who says otherwise.

So that’s it, there’s my list. I hoped you enjoyed it.

I bid adieu,

your Origami reporter,
