When Marines (and others) Kill!
Hello everyone,
I think America has a serious problem and things are only going to get worse until you want to change. That problem is the rising levels of crime by non-criminals.
What do I mean, you may be asking?
I mean that crime was the once the domain of the drug addicts, petty thieves, crazy Unabombing whack-job types, bank robbers, serial killers, mobsters and Politicians. Heh! Had to take a shot at them, too difficult to resist. Now it seems that ordinary citizens, our children, U.S. Armed Force Personnel and people who are otherwise law abiding are the new criminals.
We all remember the wave of school shootings that plagued the late ’90’s to early 21st century. Starting with the Stockton massacre there has been 30 incidents of school shootings, Columbine and Jonesboro the most famous of them all. Aside from the occasional drifter, the shooters were always classmates who had been pushed too far.
The media buzz helped to make quasi-anti-hero celebrities to each of these kids. Psychologists ran in front of the camera to give their opinion on the collapse of society and each kid got to be the center of attention for a short time, thus inspiring the next one.
Maybe if the media spoke about this in a “matter of fact” tone, in no way elevating these events beyond the murderous thuggery that they were and emphasized the consequences, fewer of these kids would have picked up their grandfather’s gun.
And speaking of schools…WTF? Why is it that every week I’m hearing about some teacher having sex with one of her students? Is there something in the air? Is it the food? Is this a new experiment the school boards of America are working on?
While investigating this odd phenomenon on the web I came to a website WorldNetDaily which has an article about teachers having sex with their students. They mention over 40 women who have had a sexual relationship with more one or more students. I couldn’t even count them all without wanting to start banging my head against the wall.
In my day the only teacher who had sex with their student was the perv old man who either harassed or seduced an unwilling or unknowing girl. The only good news I feel about this, the law seems to be taking these crimes seriously.
On the news the other day I heard a story about a 13 year old who beat a 2 year old to death with a baseball bat because the toddler was making noise and the older boy wanted to watch TV.
Currently on Yahoo is a story about a man who tossed a two year old baby off an overpass in Hawaii. Details are still pending, but one can only imagine what was going through that man’s mind. My guess is nothing but pure malevolent hate.
Everywhere I look, every station I turn to, every browser I scan, all I see is people doing horrible things to one another on an unprecedented scale…
And of course the piece de resistance is the story of Cpl. Cesar Laurean who murdered fellow marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach on December 14 of 2007.
After burying her in a fire pit in his backyard, the good Corporal went on with his life until the police finally got wise and now he’s on the run. The authorities believe he’s heading for Mexico, since he was born there and emigrated to the states.
Of course he’s going to flee to Mexico, they love to be a safe haven for criminals. Mexico is even trying to extradite some poor Mexican boys who accidentally raped and murdered 2 American girls along the border and apparently they didn’t receive a fair trial in the States.
But that is another argument for another time. Let’s talk about Cpl. Laurean.
According to reports, Cesar allegedly raped Lauterbach last Spring and I’m guessing he felt no witness meant no trial, thus no jail time. The sad thing is, this man represents the American Armed Forces, is charged with defending this country and he’s raping his fellow marines and (allegedly) killing them to save his own ass.
Laurean’s wife is cooperating, but her story is suspect and with the Corporal on the run across the country we can assume that he’s guilty. Innocent men don’t run, plain and simple. I think that Laurean needs to be tried in a military court. I suspect that justice will truly be served in that incident.
And for the rest of us, we have yet to wait to see who crosses that line. Clowns, Pediatricians, Zoo-Keepers, Mimes…
Or maybe we can figure out why crime is the new “in thing” to do instead.
I bid adieu,
your Origami reporter,
L.Manly

Sadly, there is a long history of “ordinary people” being killers. Think of that nice Dr. Crippen or Acid Bath Haigh, both respectable English professional gentlemen. And the “media” has been glorifying or at least talking about their exploits since before whoever wrote “Tom Dooley”, which is catchy little upbeat number about a young farmboy who stabs his true love and hangs for it.
But I share your horror at this recent terrible event.
