Origami Election Headquarters ‘08 - Update!
A little update,
As suspected Obama whopped some Clinton butt in South Carolina and of course the media is claiming this to be a major victory. Let’s point out a couple things that say this, shall we;
1. Obama currently leads in delegates - 63. Clinton claims 48 and Edwards has 26.
2. Obama earned more than twice the vote then Clinton. 55% to Hillary’s 27%
That does seem impressive, save for one thing. He’s a black man and South Carolina has a large black population. People are saying this election is not about race, but African Americans are going to vote for there guy simply for that reason. The same reason why whites are more likely to vote for Clinton. If anyone doubts this, refer to my old Jena 6 series of articles. Race has always been an issue in the U.S. and always will be.
Let’s see the evidence shall we;
1. According to the exit polls black voters by a margin of more than 4-to-1 voted for Obama.
2. Obama took a quarter of the white vote, but the rest 3/4 of the vote was split between Clinton and Edwards.
What does this evidence say? Put simply 75% of whites voted for a white candidate. Where 80% of blacks voted for Obama and I rest my case.
“I did not travel around this state over the last year and see a white South Carolina or a black South Carolina. I saw South Carolina,” Obama is reported to have said. The fact that an obviously intelligent man can’t see what’s going on is a little disconcerting.
Mind you I’m not saying Obama is not competent to be President (or Clinton for that matter) I’m just saying there is a divide and it’s in play. Though I will reiterate I don’t want to see either of them become President.
I’m also saying that I don’t really care whom votes for whom. If blacks are more trusting of Obama because he’s black, that would make sense. I mean how have the white Presidents being doing with helping the African-Americans in the country? Maybe they’d just like to help make history by finally voting in a black president. Something I also think is kind of cool.
But what the news media don’t seem to get, Obama’s win last night was neither a surprise, unexpected or an indicator that he’s back on top. I always think that news should wait until all information is in before declaring a winner, despite their earnest efforts to call the nomination solely in the Obama camp.
In other news Edwards pledged, “I’m in this for the long haul. We’re continuing to accumulate delegates. There’s actually a very narrow margin between Sen. Obama, Sen. Clinton and myself on delegates.”
Maybe he should have a look at the number of delegates which he has and compare them to the number Clinton and Obama have.
Senator Edwards I make this plea to you here and now, accept that you are going to be third in everything regarding this process.
If you want to stay in the race to the end, that’s your perogrative. But don’t expect a miracle in Super Tuesday.
Speaking of which, I can’t wait for Feb 5. Bring it on and let’s see some history to be made.
I bid adieu,
your Origami reporter,
L.Manly
