John Stossel: Libertarian Messiah
Hello everyone,
I do hope that I don’t over use the term messiah, but that is in fact what John Stossel is and just like a past messiah who tried to change the world, he’s being ignored and marginalized. Take a cue from the Romans, it didn’t work then so just accept his message.
Finished reading his second book Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity and I loved it as much as the next guy. Assuming there was a next guy who really, really loved it. I totally understand his new objective in educating the stupid, clueless and willing dormant in America from all the lies we are being told by those in power and by those reporting on those in power.

Politics and the Media have seemed to come together to form a single machine dedicated to maintain a status quo. They are the Matrix and we the unknowing public are all the naked, gel soaked human prisoners oblivious to the real world. John Stossel is Morpheus and this book is the red pill.
Take the red pill people! Take it!! Save yourselves!!
If you have read his first book, it’s a little more of the same. Only this time with a theme, the myths and lies we are told. He covers numerous topics, such as the millions of dollars given to undeserving people in farm subsidies. Many of these land owners get the money strictly for the reason that they are land owners.
A nice piece about the Starrh brothers who have a small parcel of land to grow cotton and their total ineptitude in making a profit off the land. So the government keeps handing them a ton of money to give them a profit. It’s total bull of course and the arrogance of these two jackasses is visible even in the text of the interview’s transcription.
Politics and religion is touched on of course. The lesson Mr. Stossel is trying to teach us;
Anything the government tries to manage, fix or save for the greater good ends up turning to s**t.(Stossel is more eloquent in his wording) Most people know this, but to see the extent of the damage or arrogance of these people, who really think that the United States will go to hell without their guiding hands, is mind blowing.
The law is another scary thing, considering this is an industry which regulates itself, has created a monopoly and positioned themselves in society to make them indispensable. Mindful of any possible competition, the lawyers make all the rules in regards to practising and insure their dominance for decades to come. If anyone is curious as to why I dislike John Edwards so much, all one needs to do is read this portion of the book.
The ideals of the Libertarian is quite right in my opinion. Any Republican or Democrat that truly believed in freedom would embrace the ideals of my Libertarianism. The problem is of course;
The Conservatives love religion and hate sex and want everyone else that way.
The Democrats love sex and hate religion and want everyone else that way.
For us Libertarians we love both and say how one chooses to utilize both should be up to the individual (provided they don’t involve others in an unwilling way) and we can all follow our own pursuits. A serial rapist loves sex but his predilections obviously hurt others. So he doesn’t get to do what he wants.
Regardless of my love for this book and the attempts by John Stossel to help the world save itself, we do have a few disputes. For example, Stossel seems to give a pass to the medical community as a whole. He seems to believe that unfettered freedom to those who peddle life to the public who needs it is equal to that of a car salesman, or a department store, or groceries or whatever.
My personal opinion is that the Medical Profession, in its entirety, should be non-profit. If you want to become a doctor to hep others that’s great. Saving lives must be very rewarding and come to think of it, the only reward necessary. Start thinking about having good karma and not a new Porsche.
Drug companies should be allowed to charge as much as they want, since they put that money back into the development in new drugs? Is that the point? I don’t buy it. Drug companies make billions and billions a year and its human nature to make large amounts of money for our own use and put in as little as we can so we make profit.
Profits! That’s what business is about. And I agree that business is best when it’s totally free of regulation and the purest form of capitalism. So why not give the drug companies and their CEOs a share? I refer you to my earlier statement: “My personal opinion is that the Medical Profession should be non-profit.”
Medicine is about giving life or a quality of life that all other professions do not match. A TV or a stereo or a WII is not the same thing as open heart surgery. You cannot compare it and therefore the ultimate freedom of being allowed life is not truly there. The 14th Amendment of the Constuituion of the United States declares;
No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
So.
I do understand the concept of free trade, fair compensation for goods, but does that include one’s life?
By my interpretation, all doctors are violating the Constitution if they refuse to see a patient when in conflict over payment. Which then begs the question…
Can someone sue a doctor or hospital for refusing to perform a procedure due to cost?
If so, what happens if they win? Or what will happen if the case is thrown out? Interesting query I think.
I know John Stossel’s view on the matter, and I know mine and the good thing is; I will not try to kill him with a car bomb to get my point across. But I digress.
I still think that Mr. Stossel is a good man who is simply by extension performing that same work that got him in the news. Consumer advocacy, and the consumer hasn’t changed just the “business.” The business is government, the law, society as a whole.
I think he’s a hero to the Libertarian cause.
