Top 10 Series: The best YouTube Videos
Hello again,
Back with a new addition of my top ten series and the subject today is:
YouTube videos.
Typically I’m not a big fan of self made stuff. I don’t go on LiveJournal or have friends on MySpace. I rarely ever visit YouTube because my own pitiful stuff sucked and I would be embarrassed to have anyone see it. Therefore why would I want to see other people making fools of themselves too?
Mediocrity should not be raised to high levels, instead it should be shunned and hidden away in shadowed realms. “Death by shame” should be the motto to all those who cannot act, sing, dance or otherwise entertain and persist in pursuing such interests. Just because you have a DVD ripper and editing software doesn’t mean you were meant to use it.
Yet, to my shagrin, every so often someone does just that and by a little skill or luck (or both) they create a short piece of video worthy of existing.
This list celebrates those people and their creations. I won’t bother to name the creator, since more often than not someone else posts the same video under a new name. I assume the link is the original and allow my readers to learn who created the mini-masterpiece through their own research.
And no, the “leave Britney alone guy” or “Chocolate Rain” are not on this list.
10. dragostea din tei - Classroom
My wife introduced me to the Numa Numa guy and while I’ll admit he was slightly clever, I just didn’t like the video as much as the rest of the world did. Then she showed me this video and it sort of was the perfect analogy to the situation and my feelings.
Really watch these kids as they perform, some are enjoying the process and others seem oblivious or defiant to the song. That’s how the world is I imagine. If love the song, you sing along. If you dislike it, you don’t. If you’re indifferent, you just pretend it doesn’t exist.
09. THE ORIGINAL Scary ‘Mary Poppins’ Recut Trailer
The name says it all. When trailer cutting began, someone had the brilliant and audacious idea of turning that beloved Disney classic into a horror film. Or was the author (Chris Rule) really showing us what we all felt. Heh!
Brilliantly cut, great music, what more can you want? I for one would love to see Scary Mary as a real film.
08. Vader Sessions
The first of several clever Star Wars parodies with the author inserting dialogue spoken by James Earl Jones from other films and placing it over scenes with Darth Vader from the 1977 film. Kudos to the good sound design.
07. Harry Potter & South Park 3 (Ginger Kids)
My wife introduced to me this odd little opus. Cutting scenes of the Harry Potter kids to an episode from South Park. My wife really enjoys this one in fact.
06. What if George Lucas restored Singin’ in the Rain?
Another jab at Mr. Lucas has his penchant for “improving” past works. This I thought was funny for a simple reason, it’s sort of true. George has gone and altered his films before, is it possible this is his plan for all of Hollywood? Muuuuhhaahhaaa!
And any video that inserts Star Wars effects where they were not once there before is never wrong in my book.
05. Batman: Dead End
A fan film that has captured the imagination, admiration and love of Batman fans everywhere. Kevin Smith has given his thumbs up for the production and its values are quite good. Sort of an anti-Final Sacrifice (MST3K film) which captures the tone and spirit of Batman so well that it shows just how bad the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher films really are.
Warner Bros. should team up with Twentieth Century Fox and make a full version of this film with the creators of this movie at the head of the production team of course.
A while back I noticed a fan-fic of two guys fighting with lightsabers, without cool costumes or backgrounds. It looked like they were fighting in an open field or something. Upon further research I discovered the further exploits of Ryan Weiber, and his compatriot Dorkman, aficionados of the lightsaber combat form.
I’ve seen all their work so far and have concluded that number 2 in the series is the best. It really works and it works because, I must say, that the choreography is what makes this som impressive. As if they are professional stuntmen these two fight one another with a skill that rivals the films.
The effects are simple, used entirely for making the sabers look cool and the visual advancement of the blades cutting through the steel laden workshop environment again shows that you don’t need 100 million dollars (a Hollywood mistake they can’t seem to figure out) to make something good.
These guys need a segment in the live action Star Wars series in my opinion.
03. What if Obi-Wan used Force speed?
The other night my wife and I were toiling around the ‘Tube and found this video. Not unlike #2, it is so simple and perfect a concept that we almost died laughing. Literally, we were in pain and our daughter was woken up from her nap by our snorting and laughing.
This video is hilarious! Perfect! Absolutely nothing wrong with it by any means, the execution was just right.
02. Darth Vader being a smart ass
My wife also introduced me to this little gem that is the epitome of Star Wars parodies on YouTube. It’s a simple concept brilliantly executed. Darth Vader being a smart ass. Excellent work!
01. Dramatic Chipmunk
And of course we save the best for last.
The Dramatic Chipmunk!
A 5 second masterpiece that to this day still spawns ridiculous wannabes. The original is always the best one of course. The music, the look of the prairie dog (chipmunk?), the whole package. I should not be so hasty to say that all DC spawns suck, in fact a few remixes have been made that which are quite good. Here is my list;
1. (Original) Dramatic Chipmunk
3. Dramatic Chipmunk Windows Edition
6. Dramatic Chipmunk The Ring Version 1.0
Kudos to the Dramatic Chipmunk.
I hope you check them all out (if you haven’t already) and enjoy them.
I bid adieu,
your Origami reporter,
L.Manly
